The history of Indian architecture begins with the earliest
known civilization of the Indus Valley. Although archaeology
records the existence of Neolithic communities, nomadic
hunters, and farmers in northern India from around 7,000
bce, planned settlements and cities only become evident in
the cities of Harappa and Mohenjodaro around 2500 bce.
This great civilization ended when
a nomadic warlike tribe, the
Aryans, migrated from Central
Asia to northern India and
settled down in the fertile
plains of the river Ganges.
