Mechanisms of Chemical Degradation of Cement-based Systems
Diagnosing the deterioration mechanism from the visual appearance of the surface of
concrete is almost never possible. Many people do, however, use the surface crack
pattern to make their diagnosis which unfortunately often ends up being incorrect. The
surface symptoms caused by different breakdown mechanisms may look alike on the
surface of the concrete (e.g. map cracking see Figure 1) but when studied in the
microscope the microstructure reveals different crack patterns indicative of various
deterioration mechanisms.
